POSITION SUMMARY

Ocean Conservancy seeks an Individual Philanthropy Officer to coordinate and implement effective strategies to drive revenue from individual donors and family foundations across the Western U.S. The Officer will independently build, manage and solicit a portfolio of donors who have the capacity and propensity to make gifts of $10,000 or more, annually. The position will also help drive effective stewardship and cultivation of mid-level donors ($1k+) under the organization’s Champions for Sea Change program. This position reports to the Director of Individual Philanthropy and is part of Ocean Conservancy’s Individual Philanthropy Group team.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

In partnership with the Director and Individual Philanthropy team, support program revenue growth by building strong relationships with donors and key stakeholders in the Western U.S. This position will:

• Build, manage and grow a personal portfolio of approximately 100 individual donors and prospects through in-person visits, targeted solicitations and personalized communications.
• Create individual goals and a comprehensive plan for each person in the portfolio and track portfolio activity and progress towards the portfolio income goal.
• Manage a regional travel schedule (up to 50% of time) that drives in-person meetings with donors and prospects for cultivation, qualification and solicitation.
• Build individual portfolio and drive new major gifts to the organization through effective prospect identification, research and qualification.
• Support the growth of Ocean Conservancy’s brand in key western regions through targeted events and partnerships.
• Draft compelling proposals and pitches to donors and prospective funders that translate technical concepts into convincing narratives. Produce and distribute regular program updates for donors.
• Build collaborative relationships with gift officers on the Planned Giving team to identify prospects and create holistic cultivation and solicitation plans for major donors that lead to transformational gifts.
• Maintain database integrity and independently extract/upload donor lists and information from Raiser’s Edge NXT.
• Empower and facilitate dynamic and strategic cross pollination to ensure that every donor receives the best possible experience.
• Embrace a mission-driven, cohesive and supportive attitude within the organization.
• Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

• 5-7 years’ experience in a nonprofit, political or related organization with a successful individual/major giving or fundraising record.
• Ability and willingness to travel—up to 50% of the time.
• A primary orientation towards long-term relationship-building and donor-centered cultivation strategies.
• Ability to communicate confidently and effectively with coworkers, program leaders, donors, and prospects; must have especially strong written, verbal and listening skills.
• Confident yet sensitive demeanor with the ability to connect with all constituencies and help them connect with Ocean Conservancy’s mission.
• Familiarity with Raiser’s Edge donor management system or similar CRM database preferred.
• Strong planning skills and ability to prioritize tasks to achieve goals in a timely manner.
• Strong moral and ethical character and a commitment to conservation.

EDUCATION/TRAINING

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.

COMPENSATION

Ocean Conservancy is committed to equity in its pay practices and posts expected hiring ranges for each of its positions. Salary minimum is $63,036; salary midpoint is $92,597. The midpoint represents the market rate for a position, and a fully experienced employee may be paid at this level. Compensation will be commensurate with the candidate’s specialty skills, years of experience, location, and unique background.  We would welcome the opportunity to connect with potential candidates whose salary requirements may be outside of the expected hiring range.
